Well, that's £2471.49, and ( about $4942.98)
So...I guess it is a fair amount.

RE: Japanese yen
That would depend on various factors, would you have a job?
Would you buy or rent a place to live?
Would you be going there to study?
ect ect.
Think of it this way... How long would that much money last you in your country now?

RE: Japanese yen
But would it? Bills, food, basic nessecities, unless someone else is buying these things for you, 5000 wouldn't last very long at all. Yet alone 2 years.

Heh, If i dont but myself anything new it would.
You kinda make a good point, of course i'd have a job, so if i first moved there $6,000-$8,000 should be enough.

RE: Japanese yen
It's always a good idea to have lots of 'spare' cash in case of an emergency.
Though, that said, Moving to a new country, new home ect ect, it would be tempting to buy anything you lay eyes on
(At least for me)
EDIT: The minimum wage in Japan is between 200 000 and 250000 per month yen I think, though, someone correct if I'm wrong) Which, means, the savings you had planned in your original post is about two and a half months wages In Japan.

Heh it would.
Thats why i'd keep it in the bank, but i'd never hold myself from spending money.

Is this some form of random number you have come up with or is there actually some logic in this figure? Is that in JPY or USD?
In modern Japan the en is the lowest unit of currency so you can't actually have .17 en (17 sen).
As said above there are numerous currency conversion sites on the web. XE.com is one I commonly use.
Don't complain to me that people kick you when you're down. It's your own fault for lying there

RE: Japanese yen
Addition to the topic:
Regretfully, I am not able to post a thorough calculation of costs because I can’t responsibly predict what kind of expenses you usually run into in Japan that differ from other places/countries, but still I’d give you around 2.5 months with 565000Yen if you are very lucky (coincides with Everdream’s minimum wage assumption). That is just my personal estimate on this with no further investigation; but I think it should be more prudent to first look for ways to obtain a job and a visa that is suitable for your talents, if you want to live there.
Yet on the conversion topic I have this to add:
You could just type into google "564,643.17 yen to dollar" then get a response. Works with other currencies too; just use the same format. Another example: (1 hong kong dollar to euro)

You can use standard abreviantions, as well. When converting, I usually type in something like "100JPY in USD" or "100AUD in USD" or even "100EUR in USD" to convert JaPanese Yen into US Dollars, AUstralian Dollers to US Dollars, or the EURo to US Dollars.
