Moving to Japan, Need Suggestions

Postby argswmtk » Tue 12.18.2007 1:11 am

Hello everyone. I'm moving to Japan for about 2 years in March and I had a few questions.

Will I need an adaptor to make my electronics work in Japan? Toaster over, PS2, PS3, radio clock, TV, lamp, tooth brush...

Also, I'm considering buying a new HD television in the US before I leave. Will I be able to watch cable television in Japan with it? Over the air signals?

Will a Japanese DVD player hook up and display properly?

I appreciate all of your comments, and any other words of wisdom that you might have.

有難うございます!

I thought similar things. ;)
Japan runs at 100, as compared to the US which (i believe) is 110 or 120, so your clocks and stuff may run slow. Your computer and PS3 (and most electronics that are not home appliances) have their nifty little power adapters that will take a current from 100-220, so you'll generally be ok.

Don't bring any appliances, as the cost of shipping outweighs the cost you would pay to buy one in Japan. Also, voltages will be slightly different (as I said above).

Japan uses a differnt broadcasting signal than the US for Digital broadcasts (and even a lot of analog broadcasts). You will most likely not be able to use your TV here. Plus, shipping a TV would probably cost you more than just buying one in Japan.

Just bring a laptop, for which you will not need an adapter if you live in the US (use the thin 2 pronged plug), coming from the UK I did need one. And as mentioned above, don't bring electrics, there's more or less no point, maybe you can send on your PS2/3 if you really can't live without it but it will be kind of expensive to ship over. Be ruthless with your packing, if it isn't 300% essential to your existance as a human being, cut it.

that´s the question! Why do you gonna buy a tv before go to Japan, at special Tokyo, where you can buy cheap electronics a lot in Shibuya?
When I go to Japan, I will bring only a laptop and 電池recharger, as electronic... that´s is only things that I consider very 必要 when you stay abroad...

I would visit Akihabara instead of Shibuya though (for electronics that is).

Thank you everyone for your comments. My company is paying for my move, so size/weight/quantity is not really an issue.

The reason for wanting to buy a TV is that now I have my PS3 so I want to watch Blue Ray movies. I really want my 1080p :D

Hmmmm.... so I guess I'll have to buy a new alarm clock, tooth brush, toaster oven, and microwave?

BTW, I'm moving to 大阪.

Thanks for all of your comments.

I've heard that Japan uses the same TV [bandwidth/refresh rate/frequency/Hz] as the UK (50Hz), but different from the US (60Hz). In which case, your TV probably wouldn't work in Japan if you're buying from the US. Apparently you can still safely use a PS3 on a 50Hz TV without problems, check the voltage though and use a suitable adapter. I'd wait and buy a TV from Japan instead. At least then you know it's gonna work for watching TV, and probably will work for your PS3 too. Instead of buying an expensive HDTV from the US and not being able to use it for anything but your PS3 for which you might have a hard time buying games/films for from Japan anyway because of the region settings.

Thank you everyone. I guess I'll have to supress my urge and not get a TV.

Fortunately, my company is paying for my cell phone as well.

I guess I'll buy some adaptors before I leave.

East and West Japan are different. In Osaka it's 100V at 60Hz.

More info here.
