I really like old Japanese hardcore and punk from before I was even born. There's a site that has some really good stuff. Some of the best bands are Crow, Violence Action, and Zone. I think CROW and Zone have actually released some new LPS, too. Great bands.

L'Arc~en~Ciel and the Gazette are pretty good too. Besides which, you have Abingdon Boys School, Asian Kung-Fu Generation and Nightmare. Not to mention solo rockers like YUI.

Like most of the other posts say:
Asian Kung Fu Generation (however, I wish they had them on iTunes!)

Want something a little harder, go with Girugamesh. Just listen to the song "Patchwork" and you'll be hooked. Either that or "Crime".

I like GazettE. I feel they cover a wide range of music. If you like to hear the bass this is a band for you.

Anthem, loudness, Earthshaker, Doom, Outrage and 44 magnum.

I really like Nagisa Ni Te (渚にて, 'on the beach') from Ōsaka, I guess they're a rock band. vocal harmonies, soaring psychedelic guitars, some folk influences. Their first album, 'On the love beach', would be a good place to start, but I guess any album will do. They come from the same 'scene' as the wonderful Maher Shalal Hash Baz (but that's not a rock band, more naïve folk/pop).
There are some 30 second snippets on last.fm, unfortunately no complete songs:
http://www.last.fm/music/Nagisa+Ni+Te
There are some complete Maher Shalal Hash Baz tracks, though, but again, this might not be what you're looking for:

('When I die' is a nice song)

PS: second the Boredoms recommendation, but yeah... not exactly Green Day

oh, and second the Sigh recommendation too, but this is by all standards a metal band, not a rock band. A very twisted, experimental metal band though. They'll hit you with some jazzy trumpet lines, a barking dog or a complete fanfare, when you're least expecting it (especially on 'Hail horror hail'). Their albums from 1993 up till 1997 are fantastic, their most recent work didn't really do much for me anymore.

If your looking for something like Black Sabbath or Guns 'n' Roses, Sex Machineguns is an awsome band. C.V. Panther and Angchang are some of the best guitar players out there. But Dir en grey is and always will be my favorite. And of course X Japan is classic at its best.
