Would I benefit?

Postby Hatori » Mon 12.31.2007 5:20 pm

Hello! Okay, I've already looked at a thread... But I'm still a little uncertain.
In my high school, next year, they're offering a two year Chinese language class. I've been contemplating the fact that maybe I should take the class when I'm a junior and a senior along with German.
The question I'm asking is would I benefit from learning Chinese to help learn Japanese?
I know vocabulary, grammar, and many meanings are different, but could these classes help me with kanji to enhance learning Japanese?
Thanks for reading!

Wasn't there a thread almost EXACTLY like this a few months back?

In fact, didn't you start it?

It would be of virtually no help, except for becoming acquainted with the shapes of kanji.

My apologies, it wasn't Hatori. But there was a thread exactly like this: See it here.

If you have been learning Chinese say at the age of four, it would perhaps a little easier to penetrate through Kanji, all you have to do is to learn the pronunciation, meaning and different usages.

I understand from other learning sites, most people find Chinese harder to learn than Japanese. Bear in mind that Chinese grammar is yet again something very challenging to native English speakers. However, when there’s a will, there is a way. So, opinions from people are something to guide you, not discouraging you, you’ll definitely have to face the difficulties if you’re determined to learn both now, you’ll sort your way through.
