I have heard they are mixing up the test, but I heard they would add a junikkyuu level (pre-level 1) like the eiken.

*nods* I had heard the junikkyuu thing as well.
I hope that what they do is make the current ikkyuu into junikkyuu and then make a new harder level.

I can't read the chinese, but I'm curious as to why they're debuing it in the spring, as the test takes place in December.

RE: News report about the changes in JLPT

Postby dimitri_can » Fri 01.04.2008 10:22 am

This yr got around 60000 plus ppl took the JLPT, estimated from 2009 onwards, the way the paper is set and the points system will change from 4 levels to 5 levels. From 400 to 800. No change in the number of questions, but will use difficulty to give marks.

This new test estimated from 2009 March onwards will be tested in Japan, Taiwan has yet to receive news from Japan when this system will be implemented.

Yasuaki Kaneda, department chief of Japan International Cultural Fund Japan Test Department mentioned that the new system will still be a written exam, but the point system and how the questions come out will change, the web has spread rumours that there will be oral examination, but this is false. He hopes that the new questions will let examinees feel the effort of taking the test.

JLPT started from 1991 in Taiwan. These 3 recent years, the number of ppl who registered increase from 6000 to 7000 ppl. This year was the highest, 62223 ppl registered. Content for future question types
will change towards if the examinee is able to accomplish a task independently and whether he/she has the able to apply what he/she has learned to real-life. Yasuaki Kaneda thinks that, the old system expects the student to know hundred, thousand of Kanji. It’s actually not enough, students need to understand how the use of Japanese words varies with contexts.

The new JLPT system will change from 4 levels to 5 levels, Level 1 being the highest. The new JLPT system will add in a new level between JLPT 2 and 3. For the examinees who know Kanji, it’s not a big problem. But for those examinees
that don’t know Kanji, from JLPT 3,4 that 300 plus Kanji, the next level is to challenge 1000 Kanji. It’s really a big obstacle. That’s why for this, the difficulty is put between JLPT 2 and 3.

Regarding the point system, from the original 400 points, it will be increased to 800 points. No change in the number of questions. The point system will use TOEIC system to gauge, using the difficulty level of the topic to give marks. Example if you score 8 out of 10 qns correct, it doesn?t mean you will get 80 marks, maybe 79 marks. It will change depending of the difficulty of the question.

Thank you very much for taking your time to translate the above article.

I would like to help translating too, but am too tied up at work. Just a minor note, I think you've missed out the last paragraph. I'll come back with it shortly.

New JLPT5 implementation, scoring points will be evaluated according to various difficult levels.

[LianHeBao/Gao Zhen reported, at Taipei]

This year, more than 60,000 people registered for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. There might be a plan probably next year on revising the setting of questions as well as the scoring system --- from current level four to level five, from current 400 points to 800 points, number of questions given remain the same, but points will be given according to its difficult levels.

新測驗預計後年三月先在日本國內試考,台灣目前尚未接到日方通知何時開始採用新制。
New test will be first implemented in Japan and estimated to take effect on March 2009, Taiwan has not yet received notification as when to use the new system.

日本語事業部試驗課課長金田泰明 from Japan Foundation says, the new system will still be in written exam, the only changes are scoring system and the setting of questions, and concerning the oral examination, it is just purely net rumours. He looks forward to seeing the introduction of the new setting will spur candidates towards a more exam-oriented with values.

JLPT held in Taiwan since year 1991, the number of registered candidates have increased from 6,000 to 7,000 annually for the last three years, a record as high as 62,223 people registered in this year’s exam. Contents of the questions are the future direction to look into, candidates are tested with the independent ability to complete a certain task (task accomplishment), and whether they can really apply their knowledge in real life (can-do statement). 金田泰明 feels that the old examination system requires candidates to know hundreds, thousands of Kanji, in fact is not sufficient, candidates should understand the importance of learning Japanese, is to put their skills to use in a wide variety of situations and changes in real life, then it is considered learning real Japanese.

新日檢將由原本的一到四級,改為一到五級,一級為最高級。新日檢在原本第二和第三級間再?加一級。對漢字文化圈的考生而言,漢字不是太大問題,但對不懂漢 字的考生而言,由三、四級的約三百個漢字,下一步就挑戰有一千個漢字的一、二級,實是一大障礙,所以這多設的一級,難度介在二、三級之間。
The new JLPT system will be revised from four levels to five levels, JLPT1 being the advanced level. There will be a new level added in between JLPT2 and JLPT3. For candidates who are associated in a more Kanji culture circles, Kanji are not much a problem, but for those that do not understand Kanji well enough, from JLPT4 - 3 knowing roughly 300 Kanji, to advance to the next step of challenging about 1000 Kanji, can be a major obstacle, so that’s why it’s implemented in between JLPT2 and 3.

計分方式方面,滿分由原本的四百分,?為八百分,題數不變,計分方式將如商用英語多益測驗般採等化計分,即以題目難度計分。如果書闥?圀粕ェ題,不一定得到八助ェ,有可箔セ到七暑纒ェ,因答對的題目難度不同。
Pertaining to the scoring system, full marks from the original 400 points will be increased to 800 points, and the number of questions given remains unchanged. Depending on the questions, points will be given according to the difficult level of the TOPIC, like the grading system of TOEIC. For example, you might get 8 out of 10 questions correct, but you might be scoring 79 marks instead of 80, marks will be graded according to such parameter.

These 6 paragraphs are more or less the repetition of the whole idea of JLPT5 and some comments from Taiwanese.

I asked JEES when they will announce this officially.
They said they'll inform it on their website in May.
http://www.jees.or.jp/jlpt/

As for this year(2008), they are going to update the information in April, not in March. It will be the same as last year's except for the test date.

平成(へいせい)20年度(ねんど)の試験案内(しけんあんない)は、3月(さんがつ)にこのページでご案内(あんない)します。

                                       ↑ 4月になるそうです。

According to the website, they postpone the new classified JLPT to 2010.
In July 2009, JLPT for level 1/2 will be held only in Japan, China, Korea and Taiwan.
