Learning another language well requires you to reflect on your own native language and also to learn a different way of looking at the world: Japanese has taught me a different way of thinking and somewhere in there I hope that has given me a mental flexibility I wouldn't otherwise have.

EDIT: Plus it has given me a new superpower: the ability to read strangers' bad kanji tattoos
