I see from the shoutbox you're from Germany. I take it you are probably more used to BBC English.

I'm Dutch and I'm fine with learning Japanese with English explanations etc., but sometimes it just takes me a bit longer to understand it (even while I don't need to use a dictionary very often).
Bit offtopic:
Do you really say "Afrikaans" in English, because this is the same way you'd say/write it in Dutch (just sounds really weird to me, I'm not saying it's written the wrong way or something). I was also really surprised how much Afrikaans(?) looks like Dutch when I red your signature (Traai toe raait Iengliesj joezieng Afrikaans vounettieks. Iets diffiekult. Prubeer om Ahfrikahns ta skrayf mett Engulsa funeetica. Diss muilik.), I understood it all!

You know, 米語 is an actual (though hardly used) term in Japanese for American English...

I guess I will answer even if it is a bit off topic. Well, I was just messing around with the orthography. If I were to write those two sentences correctly, they would be:
Try to write English using Afrikaans phonetics. It's difficult.
Probeer om Afrikaans te skryf met Engelse fonetika. Dis moeilik.
But, you are right. Our languages are similar enough to allow me to read websites written entirely in Dutch. By the way, "Afrikaans" is the way it is written in English as well.
Maar, laat ons probeer om weer na die onderwerp van moedertale terug te keer. Sterkte met die Japanese studies!
Let us try to return to the topic of mother tongues. All the best with your Japanese studies!

I did know that the South-African language had some words and part of the language in common, but not this much (and I dropped history as fast as I could ^^)
@leergierig: Bedankt, jij ook veel sterkte! Thanks, good luck to you too!
