RE: When did you begin studying Japanese?
I started (intently) studying Japanese about three weeks ago when I noticed that one of my neighbors sometimes leaves her blinds open. My preferred method is binoculars and smooth jazz. So far my study has turned up only a handful of results.
And I don't know what everybody keeps talking about textbooks for...

Still lower intermediate though. 600 kanji.

I really wonder though why make a thread like this, where the information that will be presented is absolutely useless.

I hate to say it, but about 6 years, off and on. The first 2 were regurgitated over a 3 year span when I took real classes. I got really serious and made more progress starting 4 months ago(sick of being a beginner for so long >_<). No more off periods now.

RE: When did you begin studying Japanese?
I started a few months ago. Two weeks ago everything I learned finally began to hold a great deal of meaning. I have the hiragana and katakana down. I need to learn numbers and kanji. Somewhere in the middle of this I need to make use of what I already know.
I like books. Visual novels on the Nintendo DS are good too. =/

RE: When did you begin studying Japanese?
I started learning Japanese in Feb 1980. Wow! What a long time ago!! That's before a lot of you people were born!!
I first went to Japan in Spring 1988, and went back many times in the 90's. I was pretty good at the language back then, but since 1998, I've been back here and I haven't used Japanese much, except to write letters. I write much better than I could speak Japanese, but if I went back to Japan, (and I wish I could real soon!!) I'm sure it'd come back to me fairly quickly. I'm trying to get back into studying it now.
