Then why are there so many words in my 72,000-word dictionary that I don't recognize? I certainly don't have a below-average vocabulary. (Heck, I do pretty well at freerice.com.)

Part of the problem with those "known words" studies is that the definition of a "word" is not clear and varies from study to study -- for instance, are "read" and "reading" different words? Do you count "kangaroo", "court", and "kangaroo court" as three words or just two? etc.
