Baseball Signs/Phrases in Japanese?

My hometown MLB team signed a Japanese pitcher during this off-season. Assuming he makes the team, what sorts of signs or phrases could I use to cheer him on and/or make him feel welcome?

Gambare! I imagine would be familiar.

When he drops a catch in the outfield shout "Hetakuso!"

After his second strike shout "Nani yattenda!"

That is certain to make him feel at home

If he had a chance to see this, he would be deeply moved by your post. I think even if you write/yell something in English, he would be encouraged by your sign/yell.

I'd like to know if you are going to make banners or placards as a team supporter.
(If you are a staff of the team, the phrase would be different.)

One more question.
What phrases are popular to hail a new comer in your hometown?

He's a pitcher. Typically, the player's name is chanted. I was wondering about "gambatte". Other stuff that we say for pitchers would be encouragement to strike out the opposing batter. Here's the player's profile http://kansascity.royals.mlb.com/team/p ... _id=493161

Maybe that will help. I don't know if putting his name in kanji would be good? I'd have to dig into the Japanese leagues to see how to spell his name.

Maybe something like "Go Yabuta-san!" I'm not sure how to say that, or is that sorta where "gambare"/"gambatte" come in?

I think 「頑張れ、藪田さん！」(Ganbare, Yabuta-san!) or 「頑張って、藪田さん！」(Ganbatte, Yabuta-san!) would be good.

I think it's the same as here.
When Yabuta came to the mound, many fans were simply chanting his name.

might be closer.

might be that.

For a placard,
薮田選手 祝・入団
would be a signs to cheer him on, I think.

Write the card in English - NOT Japanese. He'll feel more welcome if he sees the message is coming from Americans - not just some hometown fans. So write it in English - something like "Welcome Suda! We love you in LA" If you can't resist, how about, "Suda... Yokoso! Welcome to LA" And DON'T use "san". This is baseball. Just the last name is fine.
