Hey I didn't make the name up, but football doesn't have to mean foot to ball in this context(as in kicking), rather just playing on foot for the ball (the players are on their feet moving a lot)...I dunno.
You could easily just call soccer(football) kickball or something, that'd be even more fitting.

Hockey, tennis and Lacrosse players, to name a few, also play for the ball on foot

American Football like Rugby and Rugby League are all called "football" because they originated from a game where the prime means of moving the ball was by "foot". These games have evolved along slightly different lines but in each the movement of the ball by foot has become secondary. In Rugby League for example the prime means of moving the ball forward is by carrying (the ball can only be thrown backwards) and in American Football it is by the "throw/pass" from the QB or by carrying the ball (is that called "rushing"?).

In both Rugby League and American Football the "kicker" has become a specialist with the majority of the team unable to kick with any proficiency.

Don't get me wrong, I actually enjoy watching American Football. It is a very tactical game

oh, let's not even mention how many different forms of football there are in australia either. AndI am glad you pointed out the distinction between Rugby and Rugny league (or union as it's called in Australia)

As for my ignorance I was pointing out the "rug"by and "cricket" as far as names go really has little to do with what is involved in the game, you know word play. (yes I noticed the smiley) I am also pretty well versed on where each one originated. Although to be honest with you, there is a big discrepancy as to where a few of them originated. In some cases as many as 3 countries claim to the origins of certain sports.

In Football (US style if you will) there are two means to move the ball forward. Rushing and Passing. with each position being a specialist for a particular purpose. Unlike the other (footballs) there is quite a bit of time stoppage rather than linear play where even a penalty in other (footballs) only takes a few seconds to resolve and play continues quickly.

I am a sports fan, I love pretty much anything where people compete on a physical level, be it speed skating, frisbee golf, etc.

So, to backtrack just a bit, I was trying to make a joke, which seems to have gone the way of the dodo bird. and died upon delivery. maybe if I knew more ryming slang it would have had a better delivery.

Like I said I didn't name the sport myself. : ) Rather was just saying the name still makes sense to the game, even if it doesn't suit it very well and another sport already claimed the name. Maybe they just couldn't find a better name for it? What else would you call it?
I actually like watching soccer too (whenever it's actually televised on regular cable here) but I don't understand it at all.
One thing though, I believe in hockey the move a puck, not a ball.

wouldn't surprise me soccer isn't to big in the us, the super bowl is the biggest 97.5 million viewers in the United States for XLII (the most watched sporting event) that is funny to me because baseball is "The great American past time".

Hockey is the oldest known ball and stick game. Records exist of it having been played in Persia in 2000 BC.

I missed a while on TJP and didn't see this thread. If I may get back on topic for a second...

I loved the Superbowl! I'm a huge football fan, and this year's game was between two amazing teams, IMO.

I loved the Patriots all season, I still think they're one of the best teams in the history of the NFL. I was happy when the Giants got a chance to play, only because I hate Peyton Manning and was ecstatic Eli got to play and he didn't.

I started the game thinking the Pats where going to blow out the Giants, and felt the Giants wouldn't score at all. By half-time, though, I'd made a complete turn around.

Eli played amazing. I was definitely shocked and impressed, and that overall lead me to the switch.

The Eli/Tyre throw and catch was phenomenal!! He caught it with one hand and his friggin helmet!!

I was so happy when Eli got the MVP, he totally deserved it. This year's Superbowl was amazing <3
