hearing
i often hear, "nani atte nda yo" in movies/shows. I always assumed what they were saying was "nani yatte nda yo" is this most likely what im hearing? when someone uses the "yaru" for "to do", when it is being said quickly does it usually come off sounding "atte"?

No, it only sounds that way here because "yatte" is preceded by "nani" -- the I is overriding the Y.
Think of the name Billy Young. It only SOUNDS like "Billy Ung."
