Avatars
The avator has to be 200x200, and in either a format of .jpeg, .jpg, .gif, or maybe .png. If its not that small or the right format, then you can stick it in paint and adjust it that way.
Having read the FAQ and tried many, many times to get an avatar to work, I realised it actually should be 100x100! If you would amend the FAQ it would help future new members I think!

RE: Avatars
Some people have avatars larger than 100x100, so I'm not sure if that's a problem.
I do know however, that I couldn't upload an avatar that I'd resized and saved in MS Paint. (I tried saving as bmp, jpg and gif).
I finally got mine working when I used MS Photo Editor.

I had a even bigger one then the one I have now and is there a rule against moving ones?
Goals:
1) Have decent proficiency in Japanese, enough to get around/talk/read/write.
2) Visit Japan for a week or so one summer.

It is 200x200..
Your problem must have been size, (max. 20kb)

Hmm, if you follow the few rules there are for it, it should work..
Not more than 20kb, maximum 200x200 pixels, and it has to be .jpg, .gif or .png.

I can't upload one, either. Every time I try to modify my own profile (e.g., by adding an avatar) I get an error message, telling me that "the username AJBryant is currently in use" -- well, duh, *I'm* using it! ... but I still can't modify anything. Grrr.

Rezeyu-san, Just from looking at the properties I am wondering if you have spaces in the filename. It is adding some extra %20 and other garbage which is usually added when there are spaces. Take the spaces out and give it a try.

I get what you mean, but the process you describe is uploading. It's just that instead of uploading to webspace, then linking to it (as you do for attachments, signiture pics etc.), you upload it directly to TJP's server.

[Edit] I reduced it to 100x100, and it works fine.

You have to upload it from another page.
I used a old homepage that i used before to upload my picture.
You just have to have the direct link to your picture from the site you have it on; as an example: http://www.thejapanesepage.com/yourpicture.jpg
then you add the link in your signature but with the coding: [ img] (put your link here ) [ /img]
And there you go
Hope you understood what i tryed to say
