Yes that's right. I added a change to the Shout Box that will prevent a user from shouting until they submit at least a minimum number of posts. However, it seems those changes are creating some issues on the Forum side of the TJP site. The message "You may shout after you have submitted 5 forum posts. You currently have 0." is being displayed instead of the disabled submit button. I'm leaving the problem as is so Phreadom can take a look at it and hopefully help find a solution. It's probably something simple that I overlooked.

That's the direction I was leaning as well.

Personally, I see the shoutbox as more a mini forum for people that are already friends to say something brief. I don't really see it as an appropriate place for people that hardly ever post in the forums but participate in blogs and other stuff, and especially not new people, to shout out questions and whatnot.

I'd go for a post count of 100-300, or so, rather than 5. That way when I see a shout, I won't think, "Who is this?" I dunno about you all, but I kinda get annoyed when someone I don't know shouts at me. But when someone I know is across the street and calls out for me, or hollers out a quick question over the sounds of traffic, I don't mind at all.

That's just how I feel. I don't really see it as an elite function, more of a sideband for established friends. With 5 post counters or less, it feels a bit like someone just introduced them self, then switches to yobisute.

The minimum post can be raised easily to whatever Clay thinks it should be. I choose 5 as a starting point and for testing purposes.

I think I remember seeing a suggestion about hiding the Shout Box entirely until your post count reaches some minimum.

Perhaps it would be better to base the ability to Shout on user ranking. That way your ability to post is decided by the users themselves. If you get a negative ranking because your obnoxious, then you don't get to Shout.

A rating system would be nice. But 100-300 forum posts is...well...I think this is my 110th post in over three years if you get my point. I've seen rating systems before and they seem nice, but I never looked into them.

Due to incomplete forum theming, the shout box can only be accessed through the main page, not through the forums.
