Really? I registered with my email address, as did a number of my friends back in the states.
I also just checked it with my hotmail account, and it works fine.
The site says:

新たに mixi に招待したい友人・知人のメールアドレスを記入してください。
携帯メールアドレスへの招待状送信及び携帯での登録が可能になりました。
まだ登録をしていないご友人をmixiに招待しましょう

So how about some research before spewing off crap like Mixi hates Foreigners?

Apparently mixi changed their rules so that you have to give a Japanese cellphone address when registering using a webmail account, and this applies to Japanese people as well as overseas users. It is not because they "hate foreigners" but rather because they wish to stop spammers who register in bulk using webmail, or so that's what I've heard. But maybe mixi changed this rule since then to just provide the option of using a cellphone address (as Harisenbon's post said), I don't know since doinkies hasn't invited anyone else from the U.S. or other places.

In any case, I registered a while back with my Gmail address, and mixi still recognizes it as a valid address...

If mixi did this because they "hate foreigners" they probably would have kicked all foreign accounts off as well...but since they haven't, I doubt they actually mind foreign users.
