40% off Sail

Postby Wakannai » Thu 06.05.2008 7:30 am

This one isn't a typo as you might at first think. It is a Border's Rewards coupon. They give 40% coupons out about once a month or so, so I thought, "Great, another one." Then I looked closer...

40% off Sail By James Patterson.

Nifty little trick there. Makes me wonder if it was deliberate or an oversight.

When I was in Uncle Sam's Navy and stationed at Yokosuka, the base boating club got a new boat and held a contest to name it.

I thought the winning entry was particularly inspired, apt, and witty. The name? 夢号.

I am surprised that you were confused by that one. I get the same emails/rewards and it didn't seem hard to figure out .. Of course the 40% off was in huge print while the rest was in small print, but that's par for the course now isn't it?

It wasn't hard to figure out at all. It just gave me a moment of dissonance since the 40% off coupon is usually "one book" not a specific book.

号 is a common part of boat names.

To fully appreciate the subtle brilliance of the name 夢号 you have to pronounce it in the way that Americans with no Japanese skills would be apt to read it: "You May Go".

And here I thought it was some kind of pun on "dreamboat".
