My understanding was that うなぎ is also used as a generic term for eel.
Most of the eel served here as うなぎ is Anguilla australis not Anguilla japonica.

I don't know sushi. If there is a consensus, let me know and I'll update the poll.

なるほど
I just checked Japanese wikipedia and it would appear that うなぎ is a freshwater eel, while あなご is a salt water eel.

Yay, because that's what I was going to say. I was thinking, unagi is cooked for a reason.... what is that reason?...I could swear unagi was freshwater so anago must be saltwater.
To me sushi comes in two varities, cooked > tamago, unagi, spider roll. and uncooked. Most of the rest.
But overall, I prefer specialty rolls, whether they are authentic or not. In the area there is a Dragon roll that is my favorite. But everyone does it different, so I figure it's not an official roll. Futomaki used to be my favorite.
Normally, I hate mayonnaise, but it seems to work for some of these specialty rolls I've had.

Yeah! I've had some wicked bizarre specialty rolls at avant garde type sushi places in the States. I think I once had fresh goat cheese and mango with red pepper or something similar. Not, to my mind actually sushi, but good nonetheless.
On the other hand you see all kinds of crazy sushi at the sushi-go-round these days as well, like meatball-gunkan or grilled duck, or what have you, as well as the assorted sides, desserts and juices going around.

I don't follow your logic there
Are you saying that only saltwater fish can be eaten raw?

Some sushi places here over do the mayonnaise, yuk
Another sushi I like is あわび but it is very pricey in the few places I have seen it in Japan. Not quite so expensive here.

No, you can eat freshwater fish raw too, but it is much more likely to have harmful parasites, so it is generally a bad idea.
