One tip that works for me is whenever I learn a new word I always try using it throughout the day and I even call my friends the word I learned even though it's not really a name. And if you're learning the writing system thing, my friend told me to start off with Hiraganna, Katakanna, and then Kanji.
MY SIG IMAGE WAS OVER 100 PIXELS HIGH AND THE ADMINS SMOTE IT WITH A HAMMER OF SMITING.

write kana and kanji out loads and loads of times, everyday. eventually it will stick and you will be able to read and write comfortably. But keep studying the kana and kanji because i always forget a few that arnt used often.

And keep at it! 1 or 2 hours a week is not going to a language learn. You need to do bits all the time and keep it in your head.

but がんばって下さい!:D

Get a CD or find audio files on the Internet. You have to work on listening skills as well. NHK offers some lessons once a week, online.

Edited for stupidity. Uh, yeah. So I just wrote .[url]NHK[/u]. -_- I forgot to put the url in.... Sorry to anyone who clicked it. It should work now. (Thanks ishnar!)

as always, kates is right. listening comprehension is incredibly important. since i've started regularly listening to japanese music and watching japanese movies and television, my listeneing comprehension (and perhaps even my pronunciation as well) has improved dramatically. but ultimately the most important thing is the ability to hold a fluid conversation as smoothly as possible. i overheard a couple of japanese ladies talking at my local bookstore this weekend, and so i worked up enough courage to approach them to practice a little japanese conversation. they were very kind to me, of course, but when they happened to ask me how long i was in japan this past summer, i wanted to tell them instantly - i knew every word and how i should say it - but they just weren't coming out of my mouth. i must have stared into space for an unbearably long 15 seconds. very embarrassing! so, practice speaking with japanese every chance you get so you don't struggle with trying to say what you know you should be able to say! :D
