Word of the Day
After failing miserably at searching for "Word of the Day", I'm now wondering why we can't do an exact search on the forums.
Anyway, that's off topic. We have a Kanji of the Day thing going on. Why don't we have a Word of the Day? I found another site that's doing it and they even have an RSS feed for it. It's nice to have. Their's isn't pretty or anything, but it's nice and convenient.
Anywhoo, sorry if this is a repeat. Just thought I'd share a thought.

Re: Word of the Day
That sounds like a good idea. Maybe choose a useful word, and give some example sentences etc.
I don't know how it would be implemented, but I'd be happy to contribute if possible!

Do you mean something like Word Of The Day at japanese.about.com?
Don't complain to me that people kick you when you're down. It's your own fault for lying there

Re: Word of the Day
Phreadom is working on a brand new kanji/vocabulary section that should be very nice.
Part of it is a random vocabulary and/or kanji from your (the member) study list. For example, if you are studying for JLPT 3, you can choose from a pre-selected group of JLPT 3 vocabulary or you can create your own master study list. Every time you refresh any page on the site, (yes, even the forums) a random vocab/kanji will appear from your current study list. Of course you can also choose to turn off this block.
At least that is my vision of what he will do.
This may be many months down the road though. If anyone wants to work on some other type of project like a word of the day, I would love to help too. My goal in the long run is to have new content every day from various sources.

Re: Word of the Day
Maybe we could have some sort of a template or form that people could fill in to submit interesting or useful words of the day, and then you could choose from those.
Something like:
WORD OF THE DAY:
日本語
にほんご
the Japanese language
EXAMPLE SENTENCE
日本語を勉強しましょう!
にほんご を べんきょう しましょう。
Let's study Japanese.

http://www.japanesewordoftheday.com/ is the site I found. It has the RSS that I was talking about. But it's not such a pretty site and it doesn't have any settings/controls. It's just totally random words.
So, it's ok. But I think we (phreadom
) could do a better job.

The attached picture was a rough idea of what I'd like to see in the column around these lines.
Basically it will display a random character / vocabulary from your personal user list if you have one. So if you are studying for JLPT 3, you can set a JLPT 3 vocabulary list to be your study list.
This will obviously be a huge undertaking, but if anyone can do it, it's Phreadom.
