Re: Penis Festivals....
Yeah, but Chinese used to have "hangups" over showing women's feet, and Japanese have "hangups" over maintaining social order.
Everybody has their hangups; it's just that we loose all sense of anything called 'tolerance' whenever we talk about Christianity.

I was just going to comment on that.
Almost all necroposts seem to come from new users. Maybe new users should have posts older than a month locked until they make a certain number of posts?

I agree.
I don't know if it's logistically possible, but maybe have some mechanism where people have to read the rules of posting and the FAQ before posting is enabled, or something like that?

The most you can make them do is have them shown the rules and maybe click a check box saying they read them. You can't actually make them read them.

Actually I thought thought the board was made in April 2008... *blush* Had I realised it was 2007, I wouldn't have replied. Nevermind, then.

It would be neat to have topics older than X months with grey coloring or simple b&w newspaper style or something similar.

The board was upgraded then, and the old forums were moved over.
Y'know, every post has a date-and-time stamp on it. You could look at those.

Re: Penis Festivals....
As a new user, it took me awhile to realize that there's just not a lot of posting that goes on here (no offense).
On almost every other forum I visit, all the threads you see on the first page of a section go back a day or two, or maybe a week if it's been slow. On this forum, you get to the bottom of the first page and you might be back in 2007 (see the JLPT section). Again, it takes awhile to notice this -- it's unusual, and I think that's why you see mostly new users doing it. For me, I was lucky in that I read a post in which somebody else got yelled at for "necroposting," I then realized what the problem was, and so I learned the easy way.
What's the best solution? Politely point out to the poster the situation. After all, if they're new, it's good to be gentle so that they will continue to return and become a valued member of the forum. And if the thread happens to revive because of it, so be it.
Meanwhile, I'm rather glad it happened here, as I probably wouldn't have learned about the penis festival!
