It isn't. Why do you assume it is?
RE: mangas vs. novels
Who said manga is better? You hear a lot about manga on this site in particular because:
A) they are fun to read, usually have good stories (a novel can, as well)
B) Many people LOVE manga, and is a primary reason they are learning japanese
C) It's a semi-decent learning tool because
1) there are picture clues as to the context
2) most text in a manga is conversation
Of course, as a learning tool you'd have to realize they often use informal speech, sometimes childish speech or even colloquial or antiquated speech patterns.... but it's still kind of nice to see spoken word in print, much more than you would find in a novel.
For an intermediate student a manga would be easier to work through than a novel, and manga is somewhat more accessable than novels.
So, again I ask... what makes you think everyone believes manga are 'better'? Better is such a broad term...

It isn't. I'd recommend reading regular novels over manga. Of course finding novels for beginners is pretty difficult (or just too expensive).
I have a lot of books in Japanese but I find that everytime I try to read them I give up because I am constantly looking up words. This happens with some manga as well though.

RE: mangas vs. novels
i said that because i am trying to persuade my teacher that it at least has the same educational value as any old novel
I have 3 reason,
has more action so it keeps your attention,
you have to decipher the pictures to find out what's happening,
and Mangas orriginated in Japan so you get to see different sriting styles...
but if anyone can add more please do so

RE: mangas vs. novels
I like both (I don't exactly own any books in Japanese, as I am a beginner, but I own both types in English.). As of any situation, there are pros and cons. It depends on specific mangas/novels, your own opinion, ect. You might not put a small child's manga on the same level as a well-written fantasy novel, and it all depends on what YU are interested in (if you're 30, the child's manga does not sound that interesting.). Wow. A lot said

RE: mangas vs. novels
Another thing not to put on the same level is a manga in Japanese with an English novel. The manga would have educational value in learning a new language, if you are an English native-speaker.
RE: mangas vs. novels
So it really depends on YOUR level/opinion/and the specific manga. Ok. I'm done

RE: mangas vs. novels
no... not having them written in Japanese, just overall, you can have them written in Japanese but that's not what i meant...
sorry for the confusion;)

RE: mangas vs. novels
whell one thing that i have discovered is that novels tend to make your imagination work more, while manga even though its great the pics are already made so you dont have to make as much effort to imagine as in a novel.
;) Sometimes i preffer a manga becouse it gives me the chance to see what the creator was thinking. novels show the great abbility of an author using the rigth use of words wich can even help you to view a picture without needing to see it. in conclusion i think it depends on how you look at it
