I'm a big fan of Miazaki sensei, begining with "spirited away", but I'm also a little surprised with what seems to be a general trend in anime and manga to draw japanese characters with big western looking eyes, paradoxally the american director of "tekonkinkreet" didn't succomb to this trend. I heard once from the director of "the grave of the fireflies" that this was taken from a Dysney convention to give more intensity to the character.
What do you think about this?

Nothing really to debate here. He didn't want to draw Japanese eyes, and took inspiration from Disney. It's a stylistic choice. Others liked it and have used it since.
