巻 - "kan" or "maki"?
I'm working on a project this summer cataloging microfiches of old Meiji-era publications into the OSU library catalog. By far the most time consuming part of the job is determining the reading of names and titles. Information about volumes often shows up in the titles; I have seen the following representations:
It's something of a challenge to figure out how these are read. My guess was that the kanji is read "maki" or "maki no" when it comes before the listing, and as "kan" when it comes after. This seems to be confirmed by an entry in the Koujien for "maki" which gives 巻の一 as an example. But some native speakers I work with told me that they felt it should be read "kan" in all cases -- they would not necessarily be experts in Meiji-era usage, though. Any opinions?

Re: 巻 - "kan" or "maki"?
I thought it was "kan" when in reference to books, but "maki" when in reference to film or microfiche. Now, realize this was from a lady in one of our churches who used microfiche to document church member records for the Church.
That's not a complete "that's the way it is" remark, but it might help. I hope it does anyways.
