Are these sentences correct?

Postby b4d0m3n » Sun 10.23.2005 9:17 am

I have been learning for about four weeks now, and I was wondering if these are correct. Just wanted to test them out. :D

なまえ は ハバ です。 おげんき です か?

こんにちは ハバさん。 げんき です。 ありがとう。

なん です か?

あれ は 山 です。

わたし は 猫 です。

いいえ。 あなた は ばか です。

Lesse,

I wouldn't volounteer names in my greeting, I'd save it for later. If someone greeted me おげんきですか I'd respond はい、げんきです 、おかげさまで

You'd probably want to specify あれはなんですか if the answer would include あれは...

わたし は 猫 です。 could be legitimate in the right context. I certianly wouldn't consider いいえ。 あなた は ばか です to be good practice. いいえ、猫では「じゃ」ありません, would be much better.

Certianly words like ばか、have their place. "Are these sentences correct?" threads isn't one of them I would think.

Pretty good sentences for a start! Grammatically they're all correct, but they're a little too vague to convey a good meaning. For example:

b4d0m3n wrote:
A: わたしのなまえ は ハバ です。 おげんき です か?
B :こんにちは ハバさん。 げんき です。 ありがとう。

You should determine who is talking here. It's a conversation right? Also, before the first なまえ you should probably put わたしの in order to make sure WHOSE name you're talking about.

おかげさまです (which was taught above) is a more polite/formal way of saying げんきです.

A: あれはなん です か?

B: あれ は 山 です。

Also here, it would be best to say who is talking. Also, なんですか just by itself has a connotation of "what?" or "what did you say?" It's not specific enough. You should add あれ

B: いいえ, あなた は ばか です。

I don't really care about the use of baka, although to be honest, there are better words you could be learning. But all people starting Japanese learn it, so it can't be helped. After the いいえ, I would add a comma, not a period.

Very good job! がんばって!

Thanks guys. I realise baka is an offensive word, but at the moment I know a limited amount of Japanese, this included. I thought I may as well utilise what I know, eh? It's not as if I'd say that to anyone in real life. ;)

"Baka" isn't offensive. In practise, it covers everything from "nut" to "jerk" to "idiot" to "schmuck." It's all in how it's said and what the context is.

Now, if you want to know some *really* naughty words... ;)
