Shiso Juice, Anyone?
My mother-in-law just made some shiso juice. (You know the shiso often found with umeboshi)
1) She took some shiso plants and pulled off the leaves
2) Washed them and removed bugs (apparently didn't need the protein)
3) Boiled the leaves in water
4) Added vinegar and a little sugar
It is an interesting taste and probably healthy too!

As long as it has sugar I'll try it lol.
Did she crush the leaves or just boil them?

It isn't sweet, but I guess the sugar is there to lessen the sourness.

I wasn't there, but I'm sure she left them whole. Then she wrung a clump of shiso to get the actual juice.

That's an odd coincidence. One of my students made me some shiso juice right before I left on vacation. It was a little too strong to drink straight, but diluted with a little ice water it was delicious.

For some reason shiso juice always reminds me of the fall season, because of its . . . unique taste.
Generally its way to strong to drink plain, so I reduce it potency with alittle water and sugar.
Just to remove the bite

Wow. A lot of people have experience with shiso juice. I never knew there was such a thing.
I haven't had any more--although it still sits in the refrigerator--but she did add some sugar to reduce the bite. If it isn't fermented, maybe I'll try it again.

Clay, I have never heard of that before. What is it normally used with? Is it just a juice to drink or is it used in cooking for flavor?
