If you were wanting to start taking pictures, any category would be fine, I'm sure. Food, household items, animals, common places... A caption under the photo can be added like you suggest if the meaning isn't clear.

Well, since there are so many things you can take photos of, this would be a great group/forum activity!
Something everyone can participate in!
The only thing that might turn out tricky is that actions are not as easy to take pictures of as real objects. Another issue might also be the expression of abstract things.
