Ninja and Samurai
I'm going to make a thesis about Ninja and Samurai in 4th year in university (i'm just 2nd year student now)
<<I want to have more time to find information, so when I found a topic I like, I decided to start immediately.>>
I know Ninja and Samurai have a big difference and I think it'll be interesting topic.
Compare history of Ninja and Samurai and explain why Japanese treat them very difference (many old Japanese didn't respect Ninja).
But I love Ninja. They served their Lord, died for them and had a lot of skill than Samurai (I like Samurai also).
But I don't know which book I should read because there are too many books about Ninja and Samurai.
Can you recommend some books for me which can give me useful information?
Thanks in advance

Re: Ninja and Samurai
No, they DON'T have a different history.
Once you get beyond Hollywood or the Bujinkan bullcrap, ninja *were* samurai.
They were, essentially, Special Ops. They had a special mission, they did it.
I get so tired of going over this so many times.
Classic example: one of the most famous "ninja" was Hattori Hanzo -- who happens to have been one of Tokugawa Ieyasu's GENERALS. The guy had an estate in front of Edo Castle, for crying out loud.
You might want to visit the forum at Samurai Archives and read some of the threads there.

Tony is one of the world's most notorious ninja deniers. Go to this website for the REAL straight dope about ninja.
Never underestimate my capacity for pettiness.

If this is your thesis, shouldn't you be able to do some of the research yourself? I don't think many people on the board know that much about samurai or ninja.

oh NOES!! NINJA VS SAMURAI..
"Ninjas are fast, smooth, cool, strong, powerful, and sweet. I can't wait to start yoga next year. I love ninjas with all of my body (including my pee pee)."
ON A side note, isn't there some variance on whether the ninja were all samurai? I was under the impression (and I think we've debated this before) that some "ninja" came from the farming communities and were only defending themselves against the "complete power" of the Samurai. (edit) afterthought. could it also be that these farming communities were just fronts for "ninja" clans?

Important goal when studying in university is to become an independent researcher. You can ask pointers from people on the internet etc. but what you cannot do is wait for an tailored answer to appear on some discussion forum. You probably should consult your professor/assistant/tutor or whatever how to use different study resources available at your faculty. That's what they are paid to do.

There are a few books that you could reference. Try doing a search on Amazon.com under the author name A J Bryant and see what you come up with..
Edit: as mentioned below.. Anthony J. Bryant is what you should look up.

Anthony-san, if I buy these books frequently bought together how do I get the author to sign them?
Don't complain to me that people kick you when you're down. It's your own fault for lying there
