Forum section for other training methods and sites

Postby Jetsi » Sat 10.18.2008 9:48 pm

I was wondering, since you have a section for the Genki textbooks, would it be possible to add other areas as well for centralized discussion of other training aids and websites. I understand that working with other websites might be counter-intuitive or go against the grain, but it appears that LiveMocha is getting a little following from us newbies to Japanese and it would be nice if we could discuss the peculiarities in one spot. Plus, it appears we are noticing the same things and perhaps having the same questions, so this would reduce any chance of overlap or wasteful posts.

Just my thought, thanks in advance.

Hmm, I don't think that LiveMocha hasn't proven itself to be a dependable and somehow useful resource.
I have some issues with it, like starting with kanji right away without the possibility to see the kana version of the words, so you always have to guess from the spoken stuff. No good. And I think I'm not the only one with such problems.

Another thing is, if we started a section for LiveMocha, then others would want a section for iKnow, for every single textbook and so on, which would just swamp the whole layout and forums making it harder to navigate.

Why don't you start a LiveMocha-related thread and have it stickied or so? That'd be easier than introducing a whole section for it.

But that's just my 2 yen.

How about just one section for various different resources where each resource has a separate thread? The Genki section doesn't seem to be all that active so it might work.

I don't really want to add a new section--unless there are a lot of people wanting one of course.

But we can sticky any thread that gains traction and has good information. I suggest someone starting a thread about a particular method or aid and then updating the top post with any good information. That may be a good way of organizing things and getting good information out.

A sticky would be as good of a thread as anything out there. Perhaps an entire section was too much, and I agree, it may not last.

Clay, where do you want this thread started, or would you rather have the honor yourself?

I'd put it in Learning Materials Reviews & Language Learning tips since it deals with resources and such.

I agree with you. I will wait for Clay before I do anything as I don't want to infringe.

It has been a week, I guess Clay doesn't mind too much. I will start a thread and hopefully we can get it stickied.

Sorry! I forgot to check back here. Sure. Anything along those lines is fine. If there are several sites/services you want to discuss, maybe it would be better to create a sub-category if the demand demands it. :)
