Re: Otaku?
My gf calls herself ジャーニーズオタク. And from what she said, and going to the SMAP concert in Osaka yesterday, I am fairly certain that ジャーニーズオタク is the biggest group of otakus, ranging from every age possible. ジャーニーズ have been around for 50 year after all. Seeing all those old obasans, obaasans and everything going nuts over SMAP at the concert is quite a scenery.

so in that case, she's using it to call herself or themselves "groupies?" Perhaps it would be better if your GF called herself nocturnalOcean's otaku.. lol

Re: Otaku?
My Japanese teacher said 'otaku' means someone who just stays in their room playing computer games all day.

I thought that was just a lazy, unmotivated teenager.. no need for the special words there.

Re: Otaku?
Having watched 電車男 (Densha Otoko; Train Man), I'd say Japanese view of otaku is definitely not positive, it's quite scary. But otaku are proud to be otaku.
