Hmmmmm orz, 面白!!

電車男..."The train driver"?

And on the suject of l33t speak....http://www.megatokyo.com/index.php?strip_id=9 :)

I was going to have a long rant in agreement with the OP but instead I have decided to ask my doctor for some stronger drugs...however I have to ask:- Does anyone else think that the current "Hottest Thread" entitled "Why You Want To Learn Japanese" would be improved, both in English and Japanese by adding a "Yo" to the end of the title? *grin*

As they would say at Megatokyo, "Relax, we understand j00"!

P.S. Kodi, ay up cock'r! reet?

There. I think Ive degenerated to the general intellectual level evident in other threads on this site; I can rest a happier man.

Thank you. NOW I can see it.

I haven't read the recent posts, so I really don't know what the conversation has turned to. I'm only generally replying to the board topic.

I know EXACTLY what you mean by "leet-speak", is it? I call it chatspeak, but no difference.. I plan on being an author, or some other type of writer. English, being my first language, is simplistic to me, so hearing someone use "leet-speak" is extremely frustrating. Perhaps that is the reason I've decided to try a new language: to challenge myself and for fun (Ok, maybe I'm nerdy then :D). Anyways, I'm gald to be here :) (with literate people, at least! ;))

Apparently, I have completely misunderstood what leet (or 1337) is. Mea culpa.

Leet is apparently much like Japanese ギャル文字, which you can read about at http://kanjiclinic.com/kc69final.htm. Hope that link is clickable...

So no, 電車男 is not written in the Japanese equivalent of leet, only the Japanese equivalent of netspeak. It's not any harder -- actually, basically easier -- than all the Kobe-ben I had to deal with in Shonen H. <shrug>

Am I correct in my recall that ひらがな was originally devised by women? Seems to be a bit of a habit this... ;)

[oh and I know it is "Train Man" rather than "Train Driver", doh!!]

leet speek and chat speak are completly different. Chat speak deliberatly shortens words for faster typing. Leet speak may shorten a word or two but actually takes longer to type than normal. The more leet the typing the longer it takes. Both deliberatly abuse the language though.

Actually, I always thought that the akibakei abreviation for complete and utter failure was OTL. At least that's what the Akibakei on "King of Akibakei Challenge!" TV show said.

Much easier to write than _| ̄|○

I was just reminded of an episode from the webcomic "Queen of Wands" Image

 Don't you mean "I've taken..."?

But I know what you mean and i agree whole heartedly. But you know, I actually have the same problem reading a newspaper or even Newsweek. It's amazing what gets past editors these days.
