Dunno, but it doesn't matter unless you have a Japanese cell phone w/ an email address. You can't register without one.

I seem to remember hearing about this before, and then signing up a new account from hotmail and it worked.

Well, awhile back I tried to set up a dummy account for my wife, and couldn't for lack of a cell phone email address. If you want to join for learning purposes, lang-8 is probably a better choice.

Yeah. I have a mixi account, too.

Here's some info on it, blog-style. Don't pay any mind to the sensationalist title of the article... that particular blog isn't exactly newsy. More satire and sarcasm mixed with some good info.
