Interesting example in dictionary

Postby Yudan Taiteki » Sat 11.22.2008 5:56 pm

In the library I was browsing some of the dictionaries they had, and one of them was called something like "Japanese-American English dictionary" and was showing various conversations or phrases to use in situations. I opened randomly to a rather surprising example -- the section was about how to sympathize with someone who has gone through a difficult/negative experience that you do not share. I don't remember exactly what the English was, but the Japanese translation of it was...funny, I suppose?

The context is that A notices B never goes out with any guys and wonders why (both speakers are female).
B: 小さいときに強姦されたの。そのときから、男性が皆怖いのよ。
A: そうでしょうね。

I wonder how many native speakers would choose "そうでしょうね" as a response to that first line (or how many people would say that line, ever!)

Sounds like the ideal pick-up line to me. Wonder why it's not more popular...

 ぶっとんだ例文ですね。
その本、他にも怪しい例文がたくさんあるんじゃないでしょうか。

B: バカにするな!ハゲにだってプライドはあるんだ!
A: だと思ったよ。
とか……。

That reminds me of a sentence I found in "Touch Dictionary", which is a Korean-English, Korean-Japanese and Korean "kokugo" dictionary for the DS. (Apparently it was first called "Touch Dic", but when they found out that that actually sounds kind of funny in English they decided to change it).

Anyway In the Korean-English dictionary, under 역시:

저 유태인도 역시 육심이 많다.
"That Jew is greedy like the rest. / That Jew is greedy, being no exception to the rule."

I was pretty surprised to read a sentence like that. Maybe someone put it in later, there's also a typo in the Korean bit.

I finally took the time to bother to figure out what you guys are talking about. :P Lemme see if I understand this...

So A asks B why she doesn't go out with guys, so she says:

B: I was raped when I was little. I've been afraid of men since then.
A: I guess so.

This is more or less right, isn't it? Very strange indeed...

The そうでしょうね part is more like "Yeah, that makes sense" but to me the answer seems a bit 軽い; it sounds like you're agreeing on the quality of a movie or something like that.
