紅白 Kouhaku 2008

Postby clay » Wed 12.31.2008 7:31 am

I know very little about popular music today in Japan. So this year I’m going to make a point of learning as I watch 紅白.

I am excited to see one of the few bands I really liked when I lived in Japan. The Boom (ザ・ブーム) is playing 島歌 shima uta. The Boom is a group that mixes Okinawan and Brazilian sounds. Some of their earlier work is simply amazing. I think 島歌 shima uta is my favorite of their recordings–and it probably is their most famous song. (Here is a live performance)

You can see the lineup of artists here.

Right now they are doing a tribute to the animation director Miyazaki Hayao. Makoto is patiently waiting for Ponyo Ponyo.

I think I'm about an hour behind real-time here in Florida.

You like the Boom too?
島歌's the first song I learned to sing at カラオケ; but then I was in Okinawa at the time. =D
Do you listen to Diamantes?
They're another one that mixes latin sounds with Okinawan music.

I love The Boom. I heard them before I went to Japan for the first time and thought Japanese music must be worlds better than any current US music. I arrived and found out Japan has just as much crap as Western pop music :)

I'll have to check out Diamantes. Thanks for the tip.

Ah! Surprise: 水谷豊 Mizutani Yutaka, one of my favorite actors is singing in a few minutes... I had no idea he sang, but that will be a treat. He stars in the detective show 相棒 (Partners). I have to go out for lunch. I'll probably have to see it recorded later... :)

Anyone have any mochi they can spare? The local Asian food mart was sold out...

I just wanted to share in the love for "The Boom". My husband and I always sing 島唄 when we go to karaoke.

BTW If you like Okinawan music another biggie is BEGIN.

THE BOOM is good. I consider them Island-ish J-Ska-rock. 島歌 is by far my favorite song of theirs, and whenever I listen to it I get the urge to visit "パインアップル・ハウス", the local Okinawa-cuisine restaurant in my city, for some good 'ol ピリピリチャンプル.

I was shocked to learn Miyazawa Kazufumi (the lead singer for The Boom) isn't from Okinawa.

And I'm also quite upset Toba Ichirou didn't play at kouhaku this, err, last year. But at least Tendo Yoshimi and Wada Akiko were there. Did anyone see Kiyoshi? Even as emotional as he was, he didn't miss a beat.

(sorry my IME isn't working today).

Well shimauta's supposed to be about a mainlander who falls in love with an Okinawan girl and has to leave her.
So finding out the singer was from mainland made that song make a bit more sense. hehe
I like The Boom's "iianbe" too - in Okinawan it means "buzzed" (both being a little tipsy as well as being "amped" or feeling good).

BEGIN's another one of my all time favorite bands. Shimanchuu Nu Takara is where you want to start with them.

Never had PiripiriChanpuru - usually just Fuu & Goya styles.

Sorry, but watching Kouhaku reminds me of why I dislike Japanese (and American, for that matter) POP music so much.

Other than the Enka, it was like watching the same song being sung over and over again until the end of the show. <barf smiley> ;Q> </barf smiley>

I think to qualify for Kouhaku you either have to have a 1) pretty face or outrageous customs (talent いらず) or 2) talent -- having both is very rare.

I think shimauta is a traditional Okinawan song that The Boom arranged.

I have a lot of Okinawan 民謡 because I study 三線 (I use the term loosely - only practiced twice since buying the thing in Okinawa) and do エイサ; I've always seen the Boom credited with the song and the wiki says the guy wrote it.
The English wiki for Shimauta's pretty interesting actually.
I didn't know Gackt & Andrew WK both did versions of that song, may have to actually pick them up.
