And shall we decide on 'skype' as well?

If we decide to use "Skype", we probably need to PM the address to each other.

I wish to take this opportunity to ask Clay or Phreadom about the latest update on new TJP chat, as we might have read these threads:

The New TJP chat
(Possible to integrate with Rikaichan?)

Browser Based Chat

Thank you.

Well, I just talked to you about this on the chat server, and you told me to copy/paste that whole thing here... so that's what I'm going to do. ;)

SS and Phreadom wrote:SS: When will be the chat ready for use?
Phreadom: I'm working on it. You mean specifically the web interface, right?
Phreadom: The chat works right now. :P
Phreadom: I'm in The Lounge. ;)
SS: but does it support Rikaichan?
SS: I thought the chat you were talking about was the flash chat
Phreadom: No. We need the web interface for Rikaichan.
SS: no installation
SS: that means, we are still using Pandion, with some new features added, right?
Phreadom: No... when I do the web interface, you'll be chatting right on the website. no Pandion. Pandion is just the particular program you use to connect to the chat server right now. Like I use Pidgin instead of Pandion.
SS: so is that "Flash Chat" ?
Phreadom: http://www.ejabberd.im/ <--- That is the actual chat server software.
Phreadom: Flash Chat was something totally different.
Phreadom: It's not there anymore.
SS: Remember my post in the thread? There was once a chat like thingie in main page, and when I clicked on it I was automatically logged in ....
SS: Was that the one you were talking about all along?
Phreadom: No. That was probably the old Flash Chat.
SS: :(
SS: You know I'm stupid.
Phreadom: This will be a web interface, a little like that... but it will connect to the chat server here.
Phreadom: the one you're connected to right now. :)
Phreadom: it will default to "The Lounge" on this chat server, where we're all chatting every day (and where I am right now even).
Phreadom: and because it's not Flash based, like the Flash Chat was, you will be able to use Rikaichan in Firefox. :)
SS: Sounds nice. Why don't you explain in one of those threads? It really saves me the hassle of having to create a Skype chat room for some people. :)
Phreadom: Well... did you want to just get in a room to have a discussion? you can do that on here already.
Phreadom: using Pandion or Pidgin or whatever. the benefit of creating the web interface will be that people won't need to install those programs. They can use get on through the TJP site using Firefox or whatever. :)
Phreadom: Make sense?
Phreadom: If none of them have Pandion or Pidgin or whatever... but they all have Skype, maybe that would be easier for now?
SS: Yes. But I think ever since TJP moved, there are many people who can't connect to Pandion, you get what I mean?

(Editors note: Again, Pandion is just the client software. You're connecting to a Jabber/XMPP server, and that software is actually "ejabberd". Pandion and Pidgin are just client programs you can install on your computer to connect to the chat server running here on this server. When we get the web interface setup here on TJP, you won't need Pandion, Pidgin or any other specific chat software. Just your web browser. You'll probably want to use Firefox if you want to take advantage of Rikaichan.)

Phreadom: because they're not paying attention to all the threads...
Phreadom: that say you have to REREGISTER.
Phreadom: They're just trying to sign on and can't because the server moved. If they read the instructions they'd see that they have to register again. They CANNOT just sign back on like before. Their old account is GONE. :)

(Editors note: Here are some of the actual threads for reference:
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=11420&p=143758
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=11083&p=128343
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=11031&p=127371 )

Phreadom: (not yelling at you) :*
Phreadom: just stressing the point. :)
Phreadom: I've read it a number of times and I've even explained it to people a number of times. They complain in the very same thread where it's explained in detail... even on the very same page. :(
Phreadom: It gets frustrating. :)
Phreadom: So hopefully when I get the web chat stuff done we won't have these problems anymore.
Phreadom: I think in the meantime I'll put up a very clear tutorial for how to get on using Pandion or Pidgin.
SS: Jus, I would suggest to post this whole message (you wrote) to the thread :P
SS: If it made sense to me, it would make sense to many people.
Phreadom: Well, I wouldn't want to sound rude. :P
Phreadom: Do you understand now though?
SS: Yes. Exactly this kind of message should be repeated over and over again :P
Phreadom: Maybe I'll edit it to be a little more concise and polite. :)
SS: Then, add (I'm not yelling at you :-* )
Phreadom: hehe

Hopefully that answers some questions for people? If not, just ask and I'll try to clarify further. :)

Oops... almost forgot... " I'm not yelling at you :-* " ;)

Phreadom,
Thank you for your post and being ever patient here.
*Ahem* I've almost forgotten it is a different machine. The old chat server belonged to Zen.

Image for you. ^_^

I'm confortable with Pandion (whatever its purpose) and Skipe, but don't know about Rikaichan though I'm willing to learn if necessary.
Thanks, SS for your efforts, but I'm afraid I may not have understood a lot of your exchange with Phreadom.

http://www.thejapanesepage.com/chat

Does that help people for now? :)

Hopefully that is enough to get people on to the chat server while I work on the web chat. Let me know if you still have questions etc.

For instance, should I add directions on how to actually install Pandion after you download it? Or can people figure that part out themselves? :P

Should I add links at the bottom to the "Problems" section of the forum in case they need help?

Let me know what you think. :)

I have rarely such a clear user's directions :D
Since I did perform installing Pandion, I think that anyone can do it!
Anyhow, links to the "problems" sections could prove useful.

Since you gave a lot, I'll ask for more : I was wondering how to open a dedicated chat room like we did before for JLPT, with a password if needed; maybe SS can do it already, and my question is redundant, but if we can share the "burden"...

You can create a room in Pandion by going to the main Pandion window (the one that says "Welcome to Pandion!" in the middle of it) and choosing the "Actions" -> "Create a Conference Room..." option from the menu.

Pick a name for it and then join the room. Once you're in the room, you should be a moderator by default. You can then go to the "Actions" -> "Configure This Conference Room" menu option in the actual chat room window.

This will let you set options like "persistent", which means the room will stay there even if everyone leaves it for awhile. You can set the name that will show up in the room list, set a password for the room if you want etc.

Go ahead and give it a try and tell me if you need more help. :)

It's my pleasure. :)

I'm going to add a bit to the end of the tutorial today to show how to create rooms and how to switch between rooms when you're in more than 1 at a time. It seems like almost everyone gets confused about how to switch between rooms, so I'd better add that too. :)

I'm really enjoying this actually. :D

Phreadom, thanks a bunch.

I wonder Katafei and Caroline can log in to Pandion? I haven't yet seen them.

yes, I can (quote/unquote), but there is just the small matter of time... not just the fact that we are time zones apart! :)

I was going to wait until the wrong book arrived so I could flip through it at least before making another purchase. Odd that I haven't received it yet actually.
