Maybe other people as well, taking turns if need be...(not mentioning any names  )?

I guess we had better start planning a bit, although my book hasn't quite arrived yet either.
How about each of us (students) prepare 2 pages for a chat session. Would that be too much or too little?
So far we are 4 people, right?
If I figured out the timezones right:
Gundae = GMT -5
Caroline and katafei = GMT+1
SS = GMT +8 (7?)
(Becki = GMT +9)

So I guess maybe a Sunday GMT 13 / 14 o'clock would be a reasonable time?
Or maybe 6 / 7GMT, depending who are early or late birds....
About 1 to 1,5 hours per chat?

I'm up for GMT 13/14 on Sunday. It's going to be on Pandion correct?
Also, I don't know how much guidance I can give, but I'll try to help as much as I can!

Great!! thanks ^_^

I guess 'guidance' would just meanmaking sure we don't make wrong inferences about grammar topics...we are all serious learners, but applying grammar on new sentences is quite tricky for most of us....

let's hope Gundae can manage rising up early
@Caroline, well, we'll just have to wait and see. Usually that amount of text should provide plenty of grammar points, although I can relate to your problem!
But the only way to build vocab is to confront yourself with it, I guess.
At the moment I've started to read the Herriot book, and I've decided to simply read it and not look up words. But that is as difficult as well, 'cause a lot of times I'll know what it means, but I don't remember the pronunciation. Aggrevating

In the mean time one of my new cats has decided she wants to keep me company whenever I start typing on the pc, so she jumps on my lap and tells me whenever I make a typo....(she's not very good at spelling yet *sigh*)

Should I make a point to be around on chat then as well? In case anyone needs help with it?
That appears to be exactly 24 hours from now (it's 8am here right now GMT-5).

You are really sweet. :D
My answer would be : it would be great if you can.
The question is when :
It was not my understanding that the chat would be starting tomorrow, as everyone does not have the book yet (not to mention that I haven't yet overcome the first 2 pages!); but here, I'm a follower, not a leader... so

Please, a little guidance from our GO...

Just in case I got it all wrong, I must say that I'm not sure to be avalaible tomorrow

I think maybe we could delay it? I think becki said something about shipping a copy of the book to someone... so... It doesn't sound like everyone is quite ready to begin?

I'll let her speak for herself. :) I'm not really reading along, just making sure everything goes smoothly and maybe listening in to try to pick up a bit. ;) (I'm a real beginner myself)

With 'to break' do you mean to start of to finish?
Edit, o, I get it:
6 pages of intro and 3 pages of the story? Sounds good to me...

Is everyone okay with setting the time at 13 o'clock GMT?

My copy is the same, so it's quite clear to me.

Why me, for God's sake? I seem to be the less advanced in preparing the JLPT (especially grammar), so I'll miss a lot of points. Well, it can be fun for the others to look for the "missed" points, so why not. I'll take those first 2, then. I've no pride in these matters.

My vote would go to the 8th, I guess.

That's fine for me (the 1st isn't, as I think someone will want to celebrate the fact I'll get a little bit older not too far from that day).

Is everyone okay with setting the time at 13 o'clock GMT?

I'm OK with that.

Hi Caroline,

O, sorry, I hadn't for one moment realised it might be difficult to be the one to kick off the sessions...
Do you want to trade places? I really don't mind....

I'm glad you could come, thank you Rich, Becki and Phreadom!

We were waiting for the Chinese New Year. 丑兄弟が世界に着くのを待っている。。。
So, let's introduce a few dates:
February 1th; 8th or 15th, to start off? And then try to make it every other week...?
My vote would go to the 8th, I guess.

So I guess maybe a Sunday GMT 13 / 14 o'clock would be a reasonable time?
Or maybe 6 / 7GMT, depending who are early or late birds....
About 1 to 1,5 hours per chat?

Time Zone

I can make it on the 15th February 2009, GMT13:00 .

5 hours per chat seems a bit long ....

Same here. :)
So, just to confirm, on my part (2 pages), I will start from 第一章、第二段 ??? (2) --- 世界の中央に黄海があった。。。。。。。。。till .... 蓬山は奇岩と無数に枝分かれした小径とで迷路のようだが、実際のところ迷宮に他ならなかった。(Page 23)

EDIT: Please ignore this, I've understood Uncle Rich incorrectly. I thought he suggested to start from まっすぐに立ち上がると髪を枝に掬われた。彼 ....... (And if each prepare 2 pages, I would have to try reading those line .......)
Sorry for the confusion.

Katafei, thank you very much for the arrangement.

Calling Tanuki....Tanuki....are you around somewhere???

Y' know, Tanuki is a big boy now, he must be busy with his she-Tanuka! Image

Uh, different continents, different habits for counting time : 1,5 hour is 90 mn : Katafei was not trying to con us in a marathon

I did not write that, Katafei !
But, since I feel challenged, what I really think is that Tanuki being a big boy, he does as he wishes, and needs no excuses for dropping out! Not that I would not be pleased if he came along, of course!

I would suggest, person 1 (Caroline?) takes the first 2 pages of the prologue, through (でも、お義母さん、風邪を引いたら)
Person 2 (SS?) takes the next 2 pages, through ふいに首筋に風が当たった。すかすかするような冷たい風でなく、酷く暖かい風だった。, leaving the last line on page 11 (in my copy) to the next person.
Person 3 (Gundae?) takes the remainder of the prologue.
Person 4 (katafei?) takes the start of chapter 1, part 1, to the scene break on page 16 I mentioned before.

(The prologue, by the way, is almost word-for-word identical to that of 魔性の子, though the rest of the book is completely different.)

Thanks for taking the time to do this.
I suggest we adopt it.

(sorry about the quote, I tend to get things like this wrong, lately.... 8) )

As for Rich's suggestion, I'm fine with that. Means I get the fun part
