Don't forget 送り仮名 (okurigana)!

The words "hiragana" and "katakana" are typically written ひらがな and カタカナ, though. You don't run into the kanji forms of these words so much, though you do sometimes. Formal/academic contexts and such are more likely to use the kanji forms of these words (the Japanese Wikipedia uses kanji for them, for example).

Originally this contrasted with 真名(まな), meaning "true name" and referring to Classical Chinese. These names reflect the views towards written Chinese vs. written vernacular Japanese at the time.

Note also that "hiragana" and "katakana" are often written in kana; katakana is often written カタカナ even by native Japanese.

Let's not forget:
送り仮名 okurigana (kana suffixed to kanji stems.)
読み仮名yomigana (kana used to show the reading of a word. Furigana are a special case of yomigana.)
万葉仮名 man'yougana (kanji used purely for their phonetic value; precursors of the kana.)

I was actually going to mention man'yougana, but I think that's needlessly complicating the matter :P

Don't forget one of my favorites -- the bane of the student:

変体仮名 【へんたいがな】"different-form kana."

Which is, of course, not to be confused with 変態仮名, which is kana porn.
