White Dots Above Subtitles...?

White Dots Above Subtitles...?

Occasionally, when I am watching a movie with Japanese subtitles, I see white dots above the Japanese characters. It is in the same position where furigana would go, but there is just a single white dot above each character. I can't figure out the meaning for the life of me. I've asked at least 5 Japanese people what it is and no one can answer me. Does anyone know what they mean? Thanks!
