Feeling safe isn't the point. Being safe isn't the point. The point is to survive and to use your brain and your body to do it (and whatever extensions you deem necessary).

There is a distinct difference between feeling safer and being safer.

I do know that there is a colossal difference between being safe and feeling safe. If you're in an area where people are most-likely going to hurt you, then by all means, have a shank or a 9mm on you. But in an area where it's virtually unnecessary to have a weapon, then being the only one with a weapon like that, people will feel threatened by you; because who carries a weapon who isn't prepared to use it? Let me use the Cuban Missile Crisis as an example. When the soviets gave Cuba long range missiles, America felt threatened ( even though they had missles stationed in Turkey {as well as other places}). And this all almost ended in catastrophe. But in the end, they agreed to disarm the cuban missiles, in exchange for the ones in Turkey be disarmed as well. But also in the United Kingdom, they're not allowed to carry guns, or any other types of weapons; so when people are (for instance) robbed at gunpoint (god knows how they got one, but it does happen) and they are utterly defenseless, and rely on law enforcement like helpless children. So no one feels safer until they have a bigger weapon than the "other guy".

May I make an observation about weapon-restriction laws?

Good, responsible, law-abiding citizens obey they law.
Criminals - especially anyone bent to the intent of murder, are not concerned whether or not the weapon they are using is "legal" or not.

So, what is the result of taking weapons away from responsible, law-abiding people? It gives that power exclusively to those who misuse it.


But, anyway - back to the original topic!

A pocket knife as a weapon...??? Honestly, the idea that a pocket-knife would be viewed as a weapon never even occurred to me. That's just laughable. You'd have better luck beating someone to death with a shoe, or stabbing them with a #2 pencil. (excuse my straight-forward, violent examples =P)

It's (im)practical use as a weapon aside, a pocket knife is perhaps the single most useful tool you can carry. But, alas, if people are so paranoid as to see one as a threat, I would advise against carrying one. When it comes to weapons, or even just perceived weapons, people are emotional and irrational. There is no winning against paranoia, so it is best to avoid it altogether.
