What I want to do is get the 4/3 Kyuu test booklet from 2004 in TheJapanShop and test myself at home first. I have no idea where I would be (somewhere in the level 4 area, though) ao I think that would be helpful. The nearest city near here is NYC, which isn't that close. I'd have to miss school to take it as well, and I don't have the money to pay for it, either!
But, tell me, how long do you think you have to study to take the level 2 test? Or -prepares for the worst- level 1?

Hrm... guesstimating from what I've heard on these forums so far... Kates and Harisenbon both live/have lived in japan, and are both at least 5 years of study. As you can see, Kates doesn't think she's even ready for 1kyu, and nervous about 2kyu... so, you've got plenty of time to graduate school and get a job before you have to worry about test fees, and taking off school won't be an issue...

Yeah, as mandolin said, I've lived in Japan and I've studied (on and off) for about 4 years now. If I had been taking university classes from the beginning til now, I'd probably be ready for 2kyuu, if not 1kyuu. Though I strongly believe that to do well on 1kyuu, living in Japan is the best way to study.
If you go to the Japan Foundation website, you'll find some good guidelines for each test (hours of study, number of kanji/vocab, etc.)

Hey everyone, I'm sorry I don't know anything about the JLPT and would like to ask some questions...Which level is harder JLPT 1 or 4 and what kind of things do you need to know for each beside kanji...such as what kind of kanji and vocab?
Also how much do they differ in levels? I'm sorry for not knowing much about this and thanks for your time:).

The hardest level of the JLPT is 1, and the easiest is 4. For each test Vocab, Kanji, Grammar, and Listening Comprehension is tested. As one goes up each level, the difficulty about doubles. There is a lot of info right here on TJP about the JLPT and also lots of things on the net if you google it.
Hope this helps. ^^
