Re: 10,000 hours of japanese listening
Researchers do a lot of studies where they lock people in a room alone and do not-so-nice things to them. The people are compensated, however. Things such as circadian rhythms (where the researchers control the lights) are studied in this way.
I wonder if someone will ever do the suggested experiment, that is, lock someone in a room with something Japanese playing on a speaker 24/7 and seeing if it is learned. Or some variation of that. Common sense says it won't work, but I wonder what would really happen!

They would be able to quote the whole recording with perfect accent, but they wouldn't have a single idea what they themselves are saying, and it wouldn't have any influence on learning any other Japanese.

Now if there was video, where words were played and a picture played right after and the level of vocabulary and grammar were increased over time. I'm sure the subject might be able to learn.. Hoever, if it was just a torture session of Japanese over an over, they'd not learn a daggone thing.

It'd probably pave the way to good listening skills, since they'll be used to the sounds and rythme of the language.
