A phrase from "The Little Prince"

There's a phrase from the Japanese version of "The Little Prince" which I don't understand, and which does not have a direct equivalent in the English version.

すると、おとなの人たちは、外がわをかこうと、内がわをかこうと、ウワバミの絵なんかはやめにして、地理と歴史とさんすうに精をだしなさいといいました。

What does this mean? Thanks.

So would this translation be correct?

"And then, the adults told (me) to stop making drawings of boa constrictors, whether it's drawing the outside or the inside, and instead concentrate on geography, history, and arithmetic."

The problem is, the translation "whether it's drawing the outside or the inside" doesn't make sense to me. Is there an idiomatic expression in the original Japanese sentence that I should not have literally translated? Thanks.

That sounds OK to me, what about it doesn't make sense to you? BTW, here's the original French if that helps any.

"Les grandes personnes m’ont conseillé de laisser de côté les dessins de serpents boas ouverts ou fermés, et de m’intéresser plutôt à la géographie, à l’histoire, au calcul et à la grammaire."

言われてみれば、確かに少しおかしい気がします。

「外がわをかこうと、内がわをかこうと」がどの部分に結びついているのか、わかりませんからね。
そのまま素直に読むと、「どう描いたとしても、描くのをやめろ」という意味になってしまうので、支離滅裂です。
「どう描いたとしても、うわばみの絵なんてつまらない。だから別のことをしろ」というニュアンスにはなりません。
強いて、どこか結びついているところを探すとしたら、「なんか」という言葉ですね。
「見下している」「どうでもいい些細なこと」というニュアンスがあります。
「外がわをかこうと、内がわをかこうと、ウワバミの絵なんかは（つまらないから）やめにして」
というように、「なんか」に既に含まれている（つまらないから）の感覚を略しているとも考えられます。

これがもし
「外がわであろうと、内がわであろうと」なら、
「どのようなうわばみの絵であろうと、描くのをやめろ」となり、
単純に「うわばみの絵を描くのをやめろ」という意味になります。
こちらのほうがニュアンスとして適した訳だと思います。

フランス語はわからないので、
英語版"The Little Prince"の該当部分をチェックしてみましたが、
それを日本語に訳すとしたら、やはり後者の「外がわであろうと」のほうが適切のような気がしました。

I might have misunderstood your question but I assume "My Drawing Number One"=外側(drawing the outside) and the second one is "the inside of a boa constrictor"=内側.　I don't think it is an idiomatic expression.

Oh yes, thank you for the information! I read The Little Prince again (English version), and it was actually there: "...whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself...", which referred to Drawing number one and drawing number two. The source of my confusion was that, at first, I thought that:

"外がわ" = "そと(outside) が　わ(circle) をかこうと..."

I forgot the extra English phrase when I posted my reply yesterday. ごめんなさい.
