Jokes about learning Japanese

Postby furrykef » Fri 08.14.2009 8:07 pm

Post 'em here. :)

Here's mine to start with:

Guy 1: I've been studying Japanese for a few years now. I wonder how long it'll be before my Japanese is good as my Italian...
Guy 2: I didn't know you speak Italian.
Guy 1: I don't.

Heh, and the funny thing is, it's actually true! (OK, I'm stretching the truth a bit: I haven't studied Japanese all that long, and I already speak Spanish and have studied a little bit of Italian itself. But my Italian will indeed be better than my Japanese for probably a long time to come... and probably forever if I continue to study Italian. :P)

Thanks, furrykef.

Ok. Can you read this ? (It might be out of date, though)

こんちには みさなん おんげき ですか? わしたは げんき です。
この ぶんょしう は いりぎす の ケブンッリジ だがいく の けゅきんう の けっか
にんんげ は もじ を にしんき する とき その さしいょ と さいご の もさじえ あいてっれば

Interesting! I wasn't sure if that letter scrambling thing would work in Japanese, but I can read it.

Surprisingly, I can read some of that. What I can't read is probably just a combination of not knowing enough Japanese and being sleepy. Even the unfamiliar words and such are often readable even if I don't understand them, simply because of common sense (for example, んょし has to be んしょ, and んんげ has to be んげん). But it's all a matter of following the context: こんちには might have me stumped if it randomly occurred in the middle of Japanese text, but at the beginning of a message, it's clearly just a mangled こんにちは, especially considering that it's clearly followed by a mangled "お元気ですか?".

I actually got to the second line before noticing anything was wrong
いりぎす threw me, though. I read it as いりすぎ at first. Surely it should be in katakana?

Yes, this is amazing. :D
I didn't notice it was a messed-up-words passage.
Does it mean if you learn grammar correctly, miss-spelling wouldn't matter?

しかしこれ、音声読み上げソフトに入れたら頭が痛くなりそうですね。
(編集: 意外にもそれほどでもなかったな。)

By the way, I'd like to put here this 敬語の練習 topic.

学校で文法(grammar)の授業があった。
"助詞" (particles)についてだった。

先生が言った。
「では、みんな、"自分がいちばん好きな助詞" をノートに書きなさい」

となりの席の田中くんは、はずかしそうに
「山川なおみさん」と書いていた。

英語にもそういうギャッグが幾つもあります。

Teacher: Johnny, use "terrain" in a sentence.
Johnny: The weatherman said it's supposed terrain today.
など。
