Phd in Japanese
At my high school theres a teacher with a Phd in Latin and is one of the authors of a textbook on Latin. I was wondering if you people have seen teachers with Phd in Japanese or other languages.

Personally seen? No, but they're out there.

Are you asking specifically about a PhD in the Japanese language itself? Or more general in a Japanese related field (such as Japanese literature, history, etc)?
I'm sure someone else here can better answer this question.
I know Jim Breen is working on his PhD, but it's not specifically in the Japanese language, but, as he put it; "computational linguistics, particularly in areas relating to Japanese electronic dictionaries and text processing". Not sure if anyone else has, or is working on, a PhD in the Japanese language here.

Woah I never heard of a career in computational linguistics. That sounds very cool.phreadom wrote:Personally seen? No, but they're out there.

You could probably dig around in there to learn more.
He has lots of links related to his computer hobbies as well as his Japanese hobbies and the intersection of the two etc.
For instance, one of the neat links I ran across by clicking through from his main bio page, to his PhD program page ( http://www.cs.mu.oz.au/research/lt/ ) was: http://jlpt.gakusha.info/welcome/
I'm sure there are many more.

My Japanese teacher, who works for Harvard University, has a PHD in linguistics.
Re: Phd in Japanese
Generally such doctorates can only be got for research - either wholly as in Australia or with some advanced coursework as well, as in the US. AFAIK you can't get one "in" a language - it has to be based on research.phreadom wrote: Are you asking specifically about a PhD in the Japanese language itself? Mine is pretty specifically on Japanese, but in a fairly constrained area, namely the extraction of neologisms and other unrecorded words from Japanese corpora. The lexicographic aspect is pretty clear, but my topic is very much in the specifics of Japanese. At the moment I'm deep into 複合動詞.phreadom wrote: I'm sure someone else here can better answer this question.I know Jim Breen is working on his PhD, but it's not specifically in the Japanese language, but, as he put it; "computational linguistics, particularly in areas relating to Japanese electronic dictionaries and text processing". Re: Phd in Japanese
If there is something worth studying, then there is a PhD ...Mr.Paper wrote:At my high school theres a teacher with a Phd in Latin and is one of the authors of a textbook on Latin. I was wondering if you people have seen teachers with Phd in Japanese or other languages.

Though my opinion is that a PhD is worth the pain and the study only if one wants to work in Academia, otherwise it's pretty much useless.

I'm working on my PhD in Japanese (literature); my advisor and several other professors at OSU have PhD's in Japanese.

Now that's just too cool. I've always been fascinated by the neologisms in Japanese, and the propensity for what I *want* to call portmanteau words, but can't recall the Japanese term for.jimbreen wrote: Mine is pretty specifically on Japanese, but in a fairly constrained area, namely the extraction of neologisms and other unrecorded words from Japanese corpora.
You probably have a complete set of イミダス, don't you?

I have a wonderful parody publication by PHP called シゴダス (死語)that took to task the overused cute phrases and popular catch phrases in media and literature when it was printed (IIRC, 1990 or 91). You'd love it.

Osaka isn't a state, so it can't have a State University
