Expect it to take a very long time to learn the 常用漢字(jouyou kanji). Realistically speaking it will. The best way to transfer something into long-term memory is to ALMOST forget then remember it and practice it. Review before going to bed.

My review consists of:

1) Find a word for each 訓読み(kunyomi) and 音読み(onyomi)
2) Create contexts which use those words.
3) Write the Kanji 20-30 times.
4) Move to the next Kanji
5) Repeat

Once you done that for the list of kanji you planned to learn for the day (I usually do around 16 in one day, not every day though. Maybe every 3 days I'll pick another 16 kanji)

Get a blank sheet of paper. Write down all the english meanings of the kanji on it. Without looking write down all the kanji and their readings.

If you forget some that's ok, now you know which to review. Create more example sentences using the kanji which you forget, write them 20-30 times more again.

Once you are able to write them off the top of your head no problem. You should review the last group of kanji you learned. After you learned 100 kanji you should do a HUGE review.

As you learn more kanji, the easier it will become. It's because you'll start seeing kanji in pieces instead of memorizing a mass of strokes. You'll just be like "ah! it's only these two pieces". I'm not saying go and learn radicals I'm saying this will become natural the more you learn. Once you get above maybe... 500 you'll start to really notice it.

Farther down the road learn the radicals properly... but right now I don't think it's important.

Throughout this message I said "you should" repeatedly. What I meant is "what I do is..."
