I came across this word when I was looking for キャンドルナイト
and now I can't help wondering what on earth a 'canned routine' is???

It's a programming thing, but I'm not familiar with this term and I'm a programmer myself. I'm guessing it's a standard ("pre-canned") routine that you can always use to solve a particular type of problem.
I, on the other hand, am wondering what a 1,000,000-person candle night is.

I had heard it, but only back in school.
I believe you are correct, i.e. it refers to a black-box function/routine.
