Saint Petersburg is simply a beautiful city, you're going to love it! So many memories ... Nevsky Prospect, the Hermitage ... I think it's more beautiful than Paris, which in my opinion is simply overrated ...

I've never been to Paris or anywhere in France before. In fact, aside from a layover in the airport at Frankfurt, my only travel outside of the United States has been to Kazakhstan! That's a country that I recommend more people to travel to, although it definitely helps to have at least a basic knowledge of Russian (and if you go outside of Almaty, it's also good to know Kazakh).

But yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to St. Petersburg, I will be studying there until May 2010. Did you spend a lot of time there, or in Russia in general?

Not much, just a couple of weeks during my last year of high school. My class had a cultural exchange with a class there: we hosted them for two weeks in Italy, and we went there for two weeks. I studied at the time a bit of Russian, mostly to be able to read signs and for basic communication ... now I forgot almost everything though.

This is the city of the sun,
City of a thousand colors,
Founded by a beautiful siren.

Totò and De Filippo lived here.
"Formidabil Vesevo" is our guardian.

This is Naples or, if you wish,
Virgil's Dulcis Parthenope.

A few lines about the place where I live :D

I sincerely doubt if anything poetic has ever been written about my home (and birth) town, but this is what wiki has to say about it:
"Amstelveen is an urban village municipality in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It is part of the metropolitan area of Amsterdam. The municipality of Amstelveen consists of the following villages and/or districts: Amstelveen, Bovenkerk, Westwijk, Nes aan de Amstel, Ouderkerk aan de Amstel (partly). The name Amstelveen comes from 'Amstel', a local river, and 'veen', meaning peat or moor.
During the French occupation between 1810 and 1814, it was the capital of a canton in the French department Zuiderzee and until 1964, the municipality of Amstelveen was called Nieuwer-Amstel. It is 'technically a large dorp (village), due to the fact that it is not and was not walled......"
Hence I was born in 'Nieuwer-Amstel' and now live in de 'Westwijk'...
in fact, if you image-google eyckenstein 101 amstelveen the netherlands (not my address, btw), and click street view, you can see my little sea green toyota a little away from the grey pick-up.

BTW, how is studying in St Petersburg coming along?

And of course Amstelveen is known for the fact that a large part of the Japanese people in Holland live there, so in that sense I guess it's a good place to live for anyone interested in Japan or Japanese :D

By the way, there are a lot of songs and poems about Naples but that one I've posted is only a little, poor composition of mine...

It's my tribute to the Neapolis :)

Quite true ... though I never quite like the saying "vedi Napoli e poi muori" (roughly: one can die after seeing Naples) and it's pretty much the reason I haven't seen Naples yet  just kidding I never had the chance to visit the South.
