Don't complain to me that people kick you when you're down. It's your own fault for lying there

.... dump torrential rain of 500mm on southwestern Japan over 24 hours to early Thursday ....
Raining a lot may be an understatement. Where I live our average annual rainfall is 585mm

Sounds pretty feminine to me

Huh.. Chalk that up to cultural insensitivity on my part then.

Melor could be, like, the only one from Cthulhu Mythos with a pronounceable name.

It's starting to rain pretty heavily around here. I just got finished closing all the storm shutters, and my neighbor was kind enough to walk my dog since Rin and I are both out with a cold and hubby's not off-work 'til midnight. Hope all the other members in Japan are staying warm and toasty inside!

They dropped the female name thing a while back. You may remember hurricane Hugo and Miami?

I've saw it called Typhoon Number 18 here a lot. Is that right?
It rained a lot in Hirakata, but it never got real bad. Although, morning class was canceled!

It felt like kind of a dud to me, as they always do. We were promised 70 mph winds, but I don't think it ever got that bad. It was just raining really hard when I went to bed, and when I woke up the next morning there was nothing but sunny, blue skies.

Was the typhoon more intense in the south of Japan? I've tried contacting my friends in Kyuushuu but they aren't answering. I've sent and email too (to a Keitai denwa) and so far, no reply. It's been a couple of days now, and I'm starting to worry.

Re: Typhoon Melor
Judging by the footage on the news last night (SBS) it was not a dud however they did say;
Japan hit by deadly typhoon
... The typhoon, while fierce, did not appear to have been as devastating as some had feared. ....

The typhoon pretty much passed Kyushu by. We live inland, and though we had a bit of rain, there was really not much wind. The coast had some wind, but I haven't heard of any damage.
ETA: The natural disaster we are dealing with at the moment is "new" swine flu. Two of my sons are in bed with it now, and many of the students at their high school have been ordered to stay home (学級閉鎖), including all first year students (学年閉鎖).
