Quick question ～ていました

I feel so silly sometimes asking these questions, I should know this but my brain is spacing out so I just wanted to make sure I'm understanding this correctly. Just going to give two comparisons to make sure I understand this correctly.

Comparison 1

コーヒーの買い置きがなくなった
There isn't any coffee in the house.
意味： a completed action (in a sense); the coffee ran out, and there currently is no more

vs

コーヒーの買い置きがなくなっていた
There wasn't any coffee in the house.
意味：　describing a past state (not necessarily connected to the present); at that time in the past, there was no coffee

Comparison 2

財布がなくなった
I lost my wallet
意味: a completed action (in a sense); the wallet is currently lost

vs

財布がなくなっていた
My wallet was lost
意味： describing a past state (not necessarily connected to the present); at that time, my wallet was lost

Again I feel silly and apologize for asking something so tiny, but the tiny things always get me. Thank you in advance to any and all replies.

Yes, 買い置き it is used like that, however I was wondering if the English translation was right or not.　
Since 買い置き is something kept "in reserve", if you open a new package of coffee, the package is no longer 買い置き．
Therefore, it is not contradictory to say コーヒーの買い置きがなくなった while making ten cups of coffee.
