quickie grammer question on verb stems by themsevles

Post by Stefan » Mon 02.01.2010 3:03 pm

i know that if you have a verb stem by itself in a sentence it means "verb+and' like :

寿司を食べ 政治家がボコボコにした。
i ate sushi and beat up politicians (i know my sentence makes no sense im just giving an example for how the grammar is used)

i know that it's ok to use this in written format. I see this sometimes in comic books but my question is is this ok in everyday causal speech?

From what I understand In casual everyday speech the conjunctive form (masu stem) is replaced by use of the te form

Example

1.ご飯を食べ、学校に行った

Changes to
ご飯を食べて、学校に行った

In causal speech

So to sum up I believe there is no serious harm in using the conjunctive in causal speech, however you might come across very formal sounding.Hope that helps, Somebody more advanced than me is going to have to give a more thorough explanation.

It's a funny one, I think there is little if any difference. I would say that usage of the te form is more common when spoken, but I frequently hear the masu stem used too.The masu stem form however seems to occur with greater frequency in written Japanese than it does in spoken. But I certainly concur with leonl that there is little chance of you misusing either of them as they are largely interchangeable.

EDIT: Should probably read 政治家ボコボコにした
