ピーマン

Postby two_heads_talking » Mon 04.05.2010 4:30 pm

While I was in Japan, in the Tohoku prefecture, a common phrase or work for an air-head was the term ピーマン. Of course ピーマン literally means bell pepper.

While speaking to a native Japanese in the area, I said "I was forgetting things a bit more frequently than I used to" and called myself a 'ピーマン' and she asked me in English "why I would refer to myself as a green pepper." Then she asked; "Is that an English expression?"

Have I really lost my mind or is this not as common a phrase as I thought it was?

THTさん、お久しぶりです。 :)

THTさんのおっしゃるように、「頭がピーマン」という言葉がありました。
私の記憶では、その言葉は80年代半ばに使われていたと思います。

今はほとんど聞きませんし、たぶん「昭和の死語」という扱いになっているのではないでしょうか。 :D

Ahaha. That could happen. ピーマン was a kind of fad word in late 1980s to early 1990s. And it was used by young people only. I don't think young generation use it today. I believe overwhelming majority of the people in their 30s to 40s know the word although they never use it today.
You know the destiny of this kind of fad words. They become extinct.

Edit: おっと、cocoさんに先を越されてしまいました。 :)

I lived in Tohoku (in Iwate) for 2 years and I don't recall ever hearing this expression. Maybe it was an idiolectal expression of your friends? Or perhaps Miyagi dialect? (You were in Sendai IIRC?)

Oops... for some reason Nile-cat and coco's responses didn't show up for me when I typed this, so it looks like you already have your answer.
